Hey guys, awesome forum you have here. XJ's are awesome bikes - I rode a 82 Kwaka GPZ750 for a few years before a mate of mine showed me an ad for a 83 XJ900R with a few small repairs needed,he had been riding XJ's for years and clocked nearly 200,000kms on his and was always talking about how reliable they are. Long story short I bought it for 1000 gold coins.

70,000kms(no cam chain rattle yet), new rear tyre, rego, runs and rides pretty nice. Need to get rid of an electrical gremlin (engine goes out sometimes while cruising along at 80km/hr - sometimes I have to pull over and give her a minute before she'll fire again) :S But all in all she's comfy as hell and should be a trusty steed

They are a good bike , had one exactly the same , sold it to fund the purchase of a 2nd hand fjr1300. ,but ended up with 3 parts bikes while I had it , so in the process of making another goer . The front forks on your bike are not standard, as the originals were the anti-dive units. Either they are off a 1985 naked XJ900 , or another bike. Also like to know your location. Cheers , Murray

    Welcome to the club!

Sounds like something I was experiencing before I tore mine down completely (well, I didn't do anything to the engine), cleaned the carbs, and upgraded to a blade-style sealed fuse box. I'd hop onto the highway, and accelerate like mad on the ramp, only to have the engine cut out completely and force me to pull over. I'd sit long enough to do a visual check of all of the controls and try to start the engine again. It would fire up right away, and be fine the rest of the trip.

When I removed the original fuse setup, half the clips broke off as if they had been fatigued from repeated bending. I also went through all the connections in the headlight and removed what corrosion I could. My best guess is that the g-forces from taking off so quickly must've jiggled a wire into disconnecting. I haven't experienced the gremlins since the tear-down.

That's a classic symptom of a flaky sidestand switch.

Really? Huh. So what's the fix for that, and did I inadvertently do it?

I, m not entirely sure that all the OZ models came with the side stand switch. Of the four that I,ve had contact with , none had s/stand switches ,or even fittings for one .

If it is an 83' then it is not only the forks that aren't original as from my experience the 83' only had a handle bar mounted fairing. Looks more like an 84' onwards. The VIN no's would tell the story. I have an 85' with the same fairing and forks and the 85' forks that I put on my 83' came from a similar looking bike.
Either way it is still a good looking bike and welcome to the Forum. I really like that colour scheme and from what i have found I actually think that my 85' may have looked like that before someone painted it metallic black.
As mentioned by the others - XJ4ever is a great place to source parts and the XJ bikes forum is a great forum to learn all about your pride and joy.
