I put some money down on this bike, I am picking it up next weekend for $850. I think it was a good deal. I believe it is a 1982 seca XJ550. Please let me know if this is correct and what the exact model name is.

Oh and it also comes with the original cafe style cowl/windshield in good condition and the original seat that could use a new cover. This bike has 13,000 miles, a new rear tire, new battery, new carb boots, aftermarket 4 to 1 exhaust in 2006. I look forward to commuting with it and restoring it.

    Thanks for any help,
    Bryan

Forgot to ask, anyone know where I can get a right side cover? That is the only thing missing from the bike.

GOOD luck. Right side covers for the 550 Seca are probably the most sought-after XJ part; if you find one for anything less than $120 you did good. Gotta stay on eBay and stay vigilant.

That is indeed a 1982 XJ550RJ Seca. And you're getting it for a fair price.

If the front tire is original, replace it. Check the valve clearances, don't assume they've been done regularly. Rebuild or replace the fusebox if original; and immediately install an in-line fuel filter.

Unless you know for sure the rear brake shoes were carefully inspected for signs of delamination, do that right away.

Plan on new front hoses, and a master cylinder & caliper rebuild soon. The original hoses had a 5-year life expectancy.

At that mileage, keep a close eye on the chain and sprockets; it's going to be time for a new set soon (depending on level of maintenance in the past.)

Welcome aboard. The 550 Seca makes an excellent commuter; check my gallery.

Thanks for the good info. I may try to build a side cover from scratch. I will replace the rear brakes, clean the cards, check the valve clearance, rebuild the vacuum petcock, etc before I ride it much.

If someone has a broken side cover I could use as a pattern that would be great.

    Thanks again!
