First, I broke one of my tank emblems a couple weeks ago so picked up some epoxy, and filled it in, and sanded it. I did a decent job, not perfect but unless you get right up on it you will never notice. When it came to painting I wanted them to look as original as possible, figured I'd try to paint them over in gold, then paint them black, and wipe the letters off.

Apparently either the black paint I bought wasn't made for this, or I didn't let them dry enough from the gold paint, but as soon as I wiped them off, both paints kinda blended together, this was after sitting 12hrs and being dry to the touch.

So I sanded them down again, got most the gunk off, and went to homedept. Came out with a gold leafing paint pen, and a can of rustoleum black paint for plastic. Turned out great and they look very original. ATM they need 1 more coat of gold I think, then I will clear coat them. Once my wife gets home I will get her to resize the pics, The word yamaha is bigger than 500x500.

They need a tad bit more work, and they will look good as new, but I'm happy with them for the time being. Beats the $80 price tag for new ones :)

I'd be interested to know more about this pen. Do you have a brand name? UPC code? Part number? I've got some work to do on my emblems and like the way yours turned out.

I recently re-did the front Yamaha emblem on the forks, and I used actual silver leaf to do it. I'll get some pictures later. Probably should re-do some spots, and it could use some burnishing to make it look smoother, but really looks like chrome again!

I'm thinking of doing the tank emblems using the gold leaf too.

Oh - and have to remember to clearcoat over once the leafing is done to give it some more weather resistance....

Hey,I like this thread! I need to fix my badges, too, especially the little "650" badge on the air intake covers, which I can't find a replacement for. Mine have deep gouges in them from where the lower cowls on the fairing rubbed on them. (I've since removed the lower cowls.) What should I use as a filler?

For the first time, I saw another 1982 Maxim. Mine is in better shape, much better, but I have not had, nor ever noticed, the emblems on the gas tank before. Due to the recent falling over (mostly my temper letting me let it fall over after not starting (due to moisture in the morning)) my gas tank has a spray paint job of red over the original maroon-metallic. I am planning to possibly do a custom paint job when (at least a month or two) I can get to it. Should I try to find a gas tank (somewhat dented from my fist after being pulled back out) or the emblems for the re-finish? More of an opinion question than anything. And as for my temper letting my bike fall over and then punching the gas tank, I was Very late for work, just tryed to push start it 2 blocks and was very tired and agrivated at 5:30 in the am. While I do love my bike, I had just spent 1k + on it and was Very agrivated.... Will not happen again.... So very slapping myself for the red on maroon paint job on the gas tank plus the clutch handle and the front blinker. My bike is pretty tempermental though... She is as much a female dog as I am the exit hole for excrement, so I cant get too mad i guess. Anyways, should I really worry about the emblem, or not that important? In the mean time, if I can come up with a good design for the gas tank, will try to post so others w/ maxim might use it. Any ideas would be welcome, currenty working from tribal designs.

very good, an idea i had was if you could find a gold foil/tape with adhesive back maybe you could get more shiny to it but i know first hand what those plastic emblems look like with 20+ years on em and yours look plenty good.

Does anyone know what Yamaha did when they were making them? It might be just as easy to find someone to replacate them. Hmm, might not be legal now that I slow down to think about it. But I am sure there are manufacturers who would love to make us some with a good lead paint that would last for a good long time. If you like emblems that say Yahamaha.

The easiest way to replicate something like that would be to make a mold from a set of them in good condition, then find an appropriate substance, maybe epoxy or something just a little bit more pliable. Be a perfect match and not too hard to do.
