So tonight working on the clutch and reinstalling the clutch plates. As I was tightening the one of the five bolts that holds the clutch plate assembly together (the ones with the extra wide head adn the springs arount them), the head of the bolt stripped right off...it wasn't even very tight. And it didn't strip off right at the head...there was a good section of bold still attached (about a 1/4 inch or so).

So now I've got a bolt burried way down in there. Any ideas how to get that out? I'm thinking I'll get the dremel tool out and try to carve out some kind groove that will hopefully allow me to use a small screw drive to get it out. I'm in for some work.... :?

Try an easy out. If its not screwed completely down, then an easy out should be easy to use.

Sorry no award, sounds more like metal fatigue. So therefore you didn't do anything wrong and are actually quite lucky. Now you know that this bolt needs replacing and can do it easily in your garage and not on the side of the road! ;)

"Do you have any left hand drill bits?"

Reply: HeHe......I get it. You won't fool me with that one.

Me: Seriously, there's such a thing as a left hand drill bit.

Reply.2: I'll have to order one in for you.

THose are the replies I've gotten to this question.

If you go with an easy out, go with the screw type, not the four sided burr type.

I'm not big on dremels in such tight spaces. I find they have a tendency to grab and go round and round the hole messing up the treads. But, that's just me.

Right now ... it's just a carelessly dropped cigarette butt.

If you start messing around: Drilling, Easy-outing, heating, reverse-drilling, SeaFoaming, soaking, praying, and everything else ...

That dropped cigarette butt is going to wind-up burning down the forest and the nearby subdivision.

    Take the part OUT.
Bring it to a Machine Shop and have it drilled-out, right, on a drill press.

    Oh, no man!

If this comforts You I have done same thing few years ago.
That doesn't saves me from title "Moron"
I took it out with Easy out very easy :D

"..it wasn't even very tight" - and it must not be! I don't know torque setting on your bike but on my it is ONLY 10 Nm! That torque doesn't feel tight at all. That is reason for breaking it.
Advice, don't ever use socket wrench IF you can use ring or open end spanner. They are considerable smaller because you don't need long lever to tight small screws. If you use socket, lever is same on 10mm and 21 mm screw and that just doesn't feel right when working with hand.

    2 KiwiXJ750D:

OK, you need torque wrench but for 10 Nm You will not find one and don't need one :)

You will find one, don't buy junk tools and do need one esp. for 10 Nm.

Hold on to your hats you moron award candidates, I just now topped you all and am the king of all morons. I remembered this thread after my little incident just now and have to take away the moron title. It was actually quite funny but here goes....I pulled my 84 Honda XL out to go on a little afternoon ride because I am off work today. I have this little contour in the place, where I get my bike ready, where the bike stands more upright when I have the kickstand down. Well...it is tempting to kick start the bike with the stand down and my left foot on the peg. This is another reason why kickstands should have a safety cut off on them to stop a moron from doing this. I kicked once...nothing...twice...crap, nothing but almost...third time, BINGO!!!...no, not starting but the kickstand bolt snapped and the bike fell over along with me hitting the ground. hahaha I pick myself/my pride and the bike up making it to a tree to prop it against. When the bolt snapped it also broke one side of the stand bracket off...crap!!!! I can weld the stand just fine but have to see about getting a new bolt now and it's nothing you can substitute off the hardware store shelf. Thanks for the award!
