I have found that the John Muir "Keeping your VW alive for the complete idiot" guide to be pricess in it's simplicity and clearity. The electrical section is a great place to start if you need to learn about electrical systems on vehicles. Still, it is not a substitute for a maintenance manual schematic. I'm still here. If you care to ship what parts you have and list the bike it's going on, I can probably repair/rebuild it with little or no trouble. Cover shipping and parts and I'll take a whack at it.

If you're so inclined, and you don't take up Robert's offer, this is also an option: http://englisch.pge-shop.de/ Use the menu on the left of that web page. With new harness in hand you only need to do the connectors.

    If you decide to continue:
    - Get two sheets of plywood
    - Pin down the old harness
    - Pin down the new one you're making to match exactly on the second piece of plywood.

Hang tough and patient - there is the most pride in doing the most difficult.

Wow, those prices are pretty nice, wonder if there are any domestic folks doing this? Zilla's instructions are the word, do not get in a hurry. You can mess up hours of work over a moment or two of frustration. Slow but steady wins the race.

Hey, I did a custom harness on mine, I'm sure i can help eliminate some of your headaches. I also have a complete one without a fusebox I will sell you for almost nothing should you want to go back. I'm here to help out, I know others help was tremendous when I was fighting mine.

What are you trying to do with the custom harness? Eliminating relays, just cutting out bulk or for other reasons? I eliminated all relays, and took off my giant headlight/junction box, so it seemed easier to go custom than mod an existing harness. Here's a diagram of how my ignition system is wired. This will make the bike run, but lighting is independent of the ignition system. Good luck and I'm here to help.

Fire away. I'll be here most of the day.

BTW, keep in mind I'm on an 82 xj650, I didnt see what bike you are on, so it may be diffrent.

Also the b/w on my diagram is left unconnected on mine, it normally goes to a relay which grounds the TCI and prevents it from operating. Left ungrounded it functions normally.
