Hopefully, this is a naive question with a simple answer. Probably not.

When my 1982 XJ750 J (shaft drive) is up on the center stand with the engine idling in neutral the real wheel rotates slowly in its normal direction for forward travel. This is not gravity related. If it is stopped, it will continue rotating of its own free will. If it is manually spun backwards there is a small amount of resistance and the wheel eventually begins to rotate once again. The period of the wheel's rotation is about 60RPM. The rotation speed increases when the throttle is opened. If I pull the clutch in there is absolutely not difference in this phenomenon. What causes this? :|

    Help a brother out,

I think it's the rotating momentum of the running engine through the transmission.
Even though the transmission isn't in gear, the spinning of the main driven shaft is having an effect on the other transmission shafts. When it's in neutral your 1 through 5 gears arn't engaged but the shaft still turns.
The oil on the shaft might also affect this, as subtle friction.
    If I remember correctly.
    Hope this helps

I have the same thing going on with my '81 550. So...not an issue?

The gears in the transmission are always meshed. When "in gear" one of them will be slid along it's shaft so the dogs on the side of it engage a neighboring gear. When not "in gear" they spin on the shaft that passes through them. There is some drag in those bearings, so it will spin the real wheel when it is free.

The clutch plates are in close proximity, in an oil bath, so there is also some drag there.

Completely normal. We all do it.

Thanks for the responses guys. I cannot believe this isn't a major mechanical problem. My luck has changed. I don't often run the bike while it's on the center stand so I only recently noticed this. I guess I do like the answer!

    Thanks again,

Nah, you have it right. The 550 is chain driven... I only meant that I have the same 'symptom' as AnejoMofo.
