So I've suffered the dreaded "no-second-gear" syndrome (1981 XJ650). Ouch. I started taking my bike apart today and, after cracking the case, this is all I could find...

Could that wear be the reason that I've lost second gear? If so, does anyone know of a place I could get another one of these bad boys without breaking the bank from the local Yamaha dealer?

Also! my starter chain guard went south and broke up inside the engine. How do I remove the rotor so I can remove the starter clutch to get to where the starter chain guide is mounted?

I'm new to these bikes so I'm looking to you for wisdom.

    Thanks.

    Justin,
    There is no picture here!

***Sorry, my comp. must be slow, it just came through.

I'm not too sure about the wear as I am not as mechanically informed as many others on the site (I'm sure someone will chime in with your answer).
Good to see another New England rider on board, and welcometo the site!

Justin, in order to replace the starter chain guide, your going to have to crack that case. thats the bad news. the good news is that while you have it cracked open, you can rebuild the starter clutch and fix you 2nd gear problem!

Justin, it is regrettable but you have no other option than to bite the bullet and replace parts. Expensive they may be (hard parts you can get cheap off of Flea-Bay) but the cost of ignoring them would be greater. Save up your lunch money and look around. A donor might fall into your hand for cheap, offering loads of parts for next to nill. Best of luck, and on that selector drum, it's done. Renew it.
