Is it possible to make my 85 xj700 sound more like a harley? or would it sound dumb if i put some other pipes on it?

The more you gut and remove the exhaust, the more it sounds like a rippin' formula Ford or a drag bike. Check out Youtube for sound clips.

lol i expected an answer like that. i dont want to gut the pipes because i believe in MA it is illegal to alter your exhaust in anyway and i know some of the local towns have really been crackin down on it. I just thought maybe id be able to bolt some new pipes and be able to switch back if i wanted to.

JCwhitney.com has some exhaust pipes, pretty good prices.
I got turn outs, sticker says : doesn't meet noise requirements or bikes after 80 something but it sounds nice, and its not really loud, i hear a lot louder out there.

there are a lot of them on youtube but most that i have seen are the headers and no mufflers just short pipe curled under the bike,i have found out since joining this site that stock sportster pipes can be used to replace the ugly stock xj mufflers

i thought the only law is that it cant be above a certain DB level and even if you did gut your exhaust wouldn't it be kinda hard for them to tell? aside from being twice as loud lol at least thats the way it is for cars cuz the other day the muffler just fell off my buick and its still perfectly legal cuz its not insanely loud.

Mass is pretty stick now that they've updated the inspection requirements.

This is from 540 CMR, which is the inspection requirements for MC's, of course, I don't know of any shops which actually follow this to the letter, there are TONS of too loud bikes, hell, I've never seen / heard a Harley that's got stock pipes on it.

I think noise level is maintaned by the local PD, but they never have dB meters, and out here in western Mass, they never stop bikes, just import cars.

That sucks. In indiana there are no laws around motorcycle exhausts. Hence all the harley RUBs running around with drag pipes and shaking my windows in my house.

i have sportster or fatbob er...

i don't know for sure what model they are off of...

all i know is that most harly mufflers are 1 3/4" ID and fit
on my xs11 and sound good...

oh did i mention that they are DIRT CHEAP.

    ebay $30 - $40 WITH shipping

and heavier built then the JCWhitney ones..

and as you guys pointed out there are not many HD out there with factory pipes on.. No one wants them.. so again dirt cheap.

at that price it's worth trying them, to see if you like the sound.

In New Hope, PA the cops sit and the edge of town with a DB meter when it's a good day to ride.

I cut the stock mufflers off and put these on after running straight pipes for about a week. Very easy to put on and to take off if I wanted to be extra loud again.

I would say that if the stock mufflers were 4 out of 10 on a loudness scale, straight pipes were a 10, and these shortys are about a 7. Loud but not loud enough to get the cops to look twice if I rode past them.

will those short pipes fit the 85 Maxim 700 without mods. They seem pretty cheap in $$$$ anyways.

    Hey welcome Blue,
Usually you have to drill and adjust a hanger and if the front won't go in the collector box, you can take it to a muffler shop and get a piece welded on to fit. Easy mods.

thanks TimetoRide.I have a welder, can do my own mods then. Those pipes would then run straight(parallel)to the ground then, not angled up like the stock ones.

A notch, a bend and another weld and you got an angle !
Unless you wanted the early 70's look. . .

thanks TIMEtoRIDE.Exhaust pipes cannot right parallel to ground because the center kickstand is just below. Then shorty pipes would still be sitting up at an angle I guess

they fit okay. It's what I'm running on my 700. I cut some
slots in the larger end of the muffler so iould clamp them down tighter.

    Check out the vid

I found the slash cut side draft muffler from JC Whitney. It is 16" long and has removable fiberglass packing and steel baffel.

Also I added their whole lineup.

I have read through this chat, since I was wondering the same thing for my 1100. I just bought it and it already has pods, would like to possibly change the exhaust out to make it louder, but would like to know if that will cause issues with the carbs. It already has plenty of power, so that is not my goal. Anybody have experience?

will it sound like crap now without the mufflers?Where does your center stand rest against when in up position since it won't rest against the muffler? Can the cops stop you for no muffler attached also?

Get us a sound clip of it to listen to,that will be cool. What fitting did you use to get it to attach to the 1 5/8" collar to the chrome pipe which probably is about a 2 " diameter inside????

i think it sounds pretty mean without the mufflers. center stand rests against the exhaust tip but does not rattle. just have to be careful not to let it spring up. (planning on removing mine anyways since with it lowered, it is a feat to get it up on the center and i don't use it that often)

have had no problems with the cops so far.

working on the sound clip. i used 2 2.0"-1.5" exhaust reducer, a 2" chrome turn down, and a 1.5" exhaust clamp on either side. the reducer takes a little "massaging" with a hammer for a press fit into the turn down. then just slide the reducer end on the stock piping till it bottoms out on the clamps for the heat shield and tighten up the clamp. it will crush the reducer down onto the stock piping. they are solid too once they are all tightened up.

COOL!!!!! strat. So I pound the crap of the reducer 's 2"end to thin it out a bit so it can be press fitted into the turn down.Once it is snug I would probably run a few rivets thru so the turndown can't be accidently kicked off or vibrate loose on the roadway.
I will try it my man..thanks for the tip.

Could you please elaborate a little more on your pipes? What size are they, diameter and the such? What did you use to get them to attach to the the bike, are these pipes hollow pipes only, not mufflers? And what about attaching a mounting bracket? They do look COOL!!!!I like..Where did you find these by the way????

They look like pipes you buy at a regualer auto parts store. Just tacked on the header.are they wide open pipes no baffle, if so....is the bike running lean?
