Sounds like a dirty carb problem rathar than an idle knob problem.
Nevertheless, the idle adjustment knob is located between the #2 and #3 carb floatbowls. Easiest access is from the right side of the bike. Wear a heat-resistant glove, 'cause you'll want to adjust it when the engine is at operating temperature.

Clean your carbs ( Church of Clean clean)
    Check/adjust your valve clearances

THEN worry about idle speed when you're syncing the bike

If the idle adjustment dosen't help, then please report back as to how the carbs were cleaned. Not being able to idle without choke can be a sign of failed throttle shaft seals (among other things).

Classic restricted pilot circuits problem having to run the choke to get these XJ's to idle. Your carbs may have been cleaned but maybe whoever did it overlooked some of the passages that involve the pilot circuits.

I agree with the others...if the mix screws are between 2.5 and 2.75 turns out and it won't idle w/o the ec the problem is in the carbs.

You have a new spark plug wire ordered? They are integral to the coils. Are you splicing in the new wire?

If it's still not running correctly then you do need to revisit the carbs. You should not be running rich. When fully sorted an XJ can be compared favorably to a new inline four in terms of sound and feel.

it was idling ultra low on choke before i adjusted the idle at the carbs ..im not replacing the whole coil wire just the end bit that goes on the spark plug.. i had the carbs cleaned at a motorcycle engineers he told me the float needles where very warn but there still holding ..maybe i should order some kits from taiwan they come with all new jets and needles seems to be more in them then the ones from america and uk http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Carburet...920277?hash=item4199c860d5:g:ZD8AAOSw3ydVqsSV

Order from xj4ever. Otherwise, you'll fight and fight and fight, find out the problem is with the eBay kits you bought, end up ordering from xj4ever ANYWAY..... When you could have saved your money and just ordered the right stuff to begin with....

Hmm float needles "very worn but holding", huh? Yyyeah, riiiigghht ......
And just how did he determine that they are ' very worn'? I think it would be a big help for US to know how to determine that, too--
