If I wanted to make my exhaust louder, would drilling small holes into the end of the muffler outlet work? Would it cause back pressure or tuning issues? Would it work at all? Is this a bad idea!?!

A bad idea if you don't like annoying those behind you. If you really want more noise, that's your call. Louder pipes don't save lives, contrary to what you may hear.

If you exhaust is in good shape ...not a real good move , believe it or not back pressure actually helps make power ( side benefit more pleasant for rider) I had a Buell with a Kerker pipe had to wear ear plugs with my full face helmet, went back to stock exhaust did not notice much difference . my vote leave it as is.

The old "loud pipes saves lives" is total B.S. all it does is annoy everyone around you.

Add marbles to the muffler or add this exhaust whistle

The XJ's have such a free blowing exhaust anyway......very little back pressure to begin with. You want it louder? Take the whole exhaust system off..... That'll be louder, otherwise, leave it stock, enjoy it......and enjoy still being able to hear it the way it is
