Hello all. I searched for this but do to what i believe to be my limited searching skills, i found nothing.

I need to replace a coil on my 82 XJ650J, I need information about coil interchangeability, which bikes used the same coils as other bikes etc. I felt this thread could contribute to the forum as well by providing this information, making it easier to source used coils .

If I simply missed a thread that has exactly what I need here, I apologize.

    Thanks everyone.

    Hey there!

Part number 4H7-82310-60. It seems that these coils are very common, at least common for all those models and years:

    -XJ1100 1982
    -XS100 1980-81
    -XS650 1983
-all XJ650, including Turbo (not sure for that last one)
-all XJ750 from 1980 to 1983, Maxim or Seca
    -XJ900 1983
    -XJ550 1983.

    Hope this helps.

    Maxim677,

Welcome to the Club. How do you know you need to replace the coil?

    Try this...

    1. Disconnect the ground at the battery.
    2. Remove caps from plugs.
    3. Unscrew the HT caps from the coil (the shorter cap goes to the outside plug).
    4. Cut 1/4" off the ends of the coil wires.
    5. Replace the HT caps. One of the caps has a screw in resistor inside the cap. Make sure it's tight.
    6. Replace HT caps.
    7. Connect ground at battery.
    8. Follow manual and test coil for voltage.

Also, the 1-4 and 2-3 coils are interchangeable (just make sure you have the HT caps orientation correct).

    Hope this helps,

    Gary

    Haynes manual shows slightly different resistances on the 900 and 650/750 measurements but not a lot (primary, 900 2.7ohm 650/750 2.5ohm. secondary 900 13.2K 650/750 11.0K)

Only other detail it offers is in the 650/750 manual which states the coils are Hitachi CM12-09.

Basically though any coil with the same resistances as your good coil should work.

thanks quebecois59! It really does help. you too 750E-II_29Rbloke

Also rocs82650 thanks for the welcome wishes. Coil is definitely dead, big old crack down the side primary shorted to secondary i think. I found a used coil from an 82 xj650j (same as im working on) but got it only to find it with an open across the secondaries. now that I know some other bikes i can snatch up a coil from, this should go more smoothly.

Thanks again all! Hope the info helps somebody else as well.

    Possible options:

    1. Post WTB thread in For Sale or Trade Forum and possibly purchase a coil from a list member. We don't swap, trade or sell each other junk.

    2. Ebay > yamaha 650 maxim. (make sure they are in working order).

    3. Len (Chacal) sells them stock. He also sells dyno coils w/conversion kit. Right click the XJ4Ever Logo in the top right corner or PM him. They're expensive new but you wouldn't have to worry about them.

Option 1 over option 2 every day of the week, lot of cr4p floating round the bay :?

And option 3 best of all for long term, if you're planning on keeping & riding the bike for years :)

IIRC there's at least 2 or 3 people with coils still available in the for sale area right at the moment...

good catch. My bad. I meant Dyna. Kinda' like going to a job interview and calling the interviewer by the wrong name. I wonder why they didn't call me back. :D
