Has anyone replaced their coils with universal coils? Recommendations? Or just get OEM?

Actually I found some OEM coils at a good price. Thanks though!

I replaced the coils on Mxim-X a few years ago. I bought DYna coils from Z1entreprise. Good stuff, good price.

Question on an alternate option (looking for my XJ650 Seca)...what about Dyna's "mini-coils" that have come available in the last few years? Do they/would they have the same mounting issues as the "big green monsters?" Does anyone have experience with them?

I had no problem changing my old coils over to the Dyna coils from Len. There's just no way I'd replace old coils with old coils. Just not worth the potential of having the same issues all over again. Do it once and do it right!

Don't know about the mini-coils but why don't you ask directly to someone at z1entreprise? They sell them, and they know their stuff. They won't sell them to you if they wouldn't fit your needs.

I've got a question directly into Dyna, and I'll fire something off to Z1 shortly. I just figured that I'd stay "in the family" of XJ people first if anyone had direct experience.

That's fine! It's always a good idea to have informations from more than a single source.

Go with the dyna coils. Why would you replace a 30 year old part at the end of its life with another 30 year old part at the end of its life?

    Okay...Dyna got back with me.

    The question I sent:
Model-specific assistance for vintage: 1982 yamaha XJ650RJ Seca.
Space issues and prior customization make installation of the larger DC-1
3-ohm units a problem. Are any of your current mini-coil products an option given the ignition type and space restrictions on this particular motorcycle?

    The answer they gave:
Assumming the OEM ignition is electronic (not points) the Miniature series
coils, such as our DC3-2 should work well. They are nominally smaller, much lighter and also have a narrower mounting bar spacing, which ranges from 2.9 to 3.5 inches.Due to their specially would primary inductance, even rated at 3.0 ohms, they may draw slightly more current from the charging system which could deplete the battery reserve, so be sure the electrical system (charging) is in great shape if using them.

Looks like I'll be trying the mini's, unless Z1 gets back to me with conflicting issues.
