Ok, so I found my problem. Turns out one of the pickups fell off, got hit by the reluctor, and smashed into a million pieces.

So, how do I replace this? I kind of looks like I have to get the whole assembly, which is listed as $217 on bike bandit. Is there another option?

I'm not aware of any other means of repair beyond direct replacement. E-Bay works as Dustball and myself have experienced. If you had access to a wrecking yard's inventory and could root around in a few different models I'm sure you could come up with something.
On the other side of the problem, are you planning anything with the remaining coil? I'd like to find out how many windings are in those without hacking up a good unit. I'd cover postage.
Contact Chacal and see if he has anything floating around.

    I bought a P1 from here

for my xj600,1991. It needed a bit of persuading with a file to extend the holes but works fine. Not sure if that helps but saved me money. Both my xj600's had this issue so I'd be dubious of buying a second hand one.
