I was working this weekend on my 81 Seca XJ and my hand slipped...breaking off the ignition housing and key barrel...so the connection disk is just left with the 4 colored wires connected to it...

My question, ..... can a person put a rocker style switch in place of the factory unit to be used for key-less operating? The bike shows 4 wires going into the unit, but my rocker switch has only 3 prongs...

My manual does not clearly tell me what these 4 wires are doing...above the obvious...power, relay...etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated....

For about $25 I'd put an aftermarket switch back in place. Theft deterance, especially on your fine toy would be a very good idea. JC Whitney has them. You could go keyless. The Haynes shows 5 wires for the '81 750 RH. You would want to get a three pole, two position switch and runyour Blue, Brown, and Red wires through those. This will not give you a park position. For that you would need an additional switch between the blue and the red wire. This does not include the power lines for your display which you should see as a set of wires White with Red stripe. These would need to be jumpered as well for start up. So thats up to 5 poles on this switch. Not an easy thing to find for a quality device and not easily mounted with all the associated wiring. I could go on if you like an draw you a picture of what wires go where, but a $17 Haynes manual would serve you better. Let us know what you want to do.

    I appreciate it...
I was going to use a remote switch hidden on the frame but,

I was concerned about the extra wires for start up... I was hoping since my bike has no visible gauges or computer display that I could bypass some of those wires...but it sounds like the bike needs all of them connected. I will propably just order a new one....thanks for the input...

Here are your diagrams. I would highly recommend a marine type switch for weather protection and seal all connections with clear RTV. If you have further questions please feel free to drop me a line.

I would go that route if it were my machine because it is the simplest, cheapest fix and you can lock the machine up. Buuut for you moders out there, this is one more way to tinker. Be sure to place that switch well out of the way, for instance under a locking cover or under the seat just to name a few places. I'm worried about joyriders seeing this mod and swiping your ride Tyler.
