so , im in the process of rebuilding an xj600 into a cafe racer, im dismantling it today, and tried to remove the ignition switch from the triple tree, acording to the haynes manual it should be held on with 2x 6mm bolts from underneath. but all i can see is 2 cone shaped nuts. are these "shear nuts", i will be removing the tripple tree top yolk later, so is it a case of chiseling the nuts off, i cant find any referance to the nuts, but i will be discarding the switch and replacing it with a credit card type ignition reader placed under the seat area.
    cheers all

not a system really, just an electronic card reader to replace the ignition switch, bought from local electronic store (maplins) for £5. Its supplied with 3 cards (credit card size). it works from 9volts ,so i've put a voltage regultor in line with it,when you put the card in the slot it reads the card and then makes a pair of contacts, which i have wired through a relay to turn on the ignition.
had it working ok on the bench, i've yet to instal it on the bike

How robust and what's expected longevity of the magnetic stripe?

its not a magnetic stripe, its 2 infra red led's that read 2 white spots on the black cards. the only problem is they are all the same, so anyone else buying the same card reader has the same card spots, so the manufacturers have made the led mount movable by jacking 2 screws in, you trim the card off a little, so only your card matches the led positions.
the card readers are now discontinued at maplins so i bought 2.
if anyone needs to know more i'm sure there will be other retailers that stock similar products
i can do photos and a diagram if anyone is interested, but as i said its still on the bench ,as the bike's in bits
    cheers

I've been thinking about doing something similar, but with rfid, which will be similar to a chipped car key that will only allow keys that have been added to the list to be used.

Interesting idea, but doesn't that get rid of the steering lock? somebody could just roll your bike away ...

I was thinking of doing mine in addition to the regular keyed ignition, which would retain the steering lock. Probably in the neutral switch circuit somewhere.

yes thats right the steering lock would no longer operate, thats why in britain we all use chains and disclocks.
steering locks are a bit naff anyway, and can easily be broken. the ignition key position was in the way for me to mount my acewell dash, so i had to move it anyway.
i'll do write up when i get back from a trip
    cheers stu

just FYI - the voltage can surge past 15V in use.

    yes, cheers "timetoride.
the voltage regulator i mentioned, is a small electronic device that will check any voltage up to 35v, and reduce it to whatever voltage range you picked.
in my case 9v ,but they're also available from 3v up to 12v.
ideal for supplying led's instead of resistors.
    cheers

cool project, let us know how it goes!

i like the rfid fobs, so you can just leave it in your pocket like on some new cars. as long as its with you ou can open the doors and start the car without ever even getting it out of your pocket!

i've made a small box to mount the face of the reader in, and to stop the card from falling out.
the box has a spring hinged lid
