It may be helpful to explain in detail your problem(s). That way we can get to the root of the ignition problem(s) more quickly.

Well I just bought an 82XJ1100 and the previous owner said he had it running last year. Well I put a battery in it and no spark. It cranks very slowly ( cuz the battery is junk) but cranks O.K. with the plugs removed and thus no spark and no clue how to identify the components let alone test them. I got a C.D. of the service manual but it is very hard to follow ( different format than I am used to). Also the brakes are locked up but I think I can handle that on my own. The start circuit is rigged but I don't think that is the problem because it ran once set up that way. I don't do the part replacement until it runs routine. I hope it's not the module cuz they're stoopid money... HELP!! TECHLINETOM

You may very well just need a new or good battery. A weak battery will not have enough juice to power the starter and the ignition. Just a little drop in battery amps and the spark is gone. Another source of this problem is the kickstand safety switch. If it sticks the coils will not fire. So check to make sure it is not stuck.

    I have a similar problem.
My XJ650LJ wouldn't start after only one week of not riding early Nov. I tried push-starting her, but the engine just wouldn't fire. I figured it's probably fuel-related, and I'm carb-screwed. But maybe it's the spark-plugs/battery?

So a couple weeks later I take out the battery, the acid levels are almost bottomed out, so I got excited - it's just the battery! I got a new battery, poured acid in, started charging, but after about 5-6 hours was forced to remove it prematurely because people thought it was a bomb and dangerous) Anyway, put it in, tried to start. No luck.

I'm not sure if its because the new battery lacks the charge, or if its spark plugs, or fuel delivery issue? Help would be awesome, because I had to push it with 2 friends all the way back home into the garage for at least an hour =)

try putting the battery back on the charger. i let mine go overnight when i got it. it was probably on there for 10 hours. im dealing with similar starting troubles trying to figure if it is fuel or electrical.

if the battery is bad. the engine will crank slow and provide no spark.

the battery has to read AT LEAST 11 volts while cranking.

the bang you experienced was probably due to high amp charging of the battery. and since the battery was low on water. there's a good chance the cells have shorted out. the battery is no good.
