I'm so very confused....

    I thought I had figured out how to get my carbs working correctly but I guess there's still so much to learn.

    1) My plugs are multi-colored. Half of it is nice and brown while half is white. Or in the case of 4, half is black as night and the other half is chocolate brown. What does this mean and how do I fix it?

    2) My colortune, with my homemade YICS tool in, is nice and benson blue all across the board but the plugs are still coming out multi-colored.

    3) If I lean out my plugs I can get them completely white or if I open them all the way I can get them completely black and sooty, but I cannot get them to be a solid brown(tan) all the way around.

    4) They are gapped correctly

    5) Sometimes in the 3,000-4,000 rpm range I get a light popping from my exhaust pipes. As far as I know this means the bike is running lean but again the colortune is benson blue saying it is running in the perfect range.

    Does anyone know how I can fix these issues?

    The only true way to get a picture of how your plugs are is to, ride the bike at high revs, hit the kill switch, pull in the clutch & come to a stop, pull the plugs & that will tell you exactly what you need to know, then adjust the pilot mixture screws just a few degrees at a time.

    1) Your #4 plug, tweak the pilot in just a little, it's possible if it's always darker, that you have a bad intake valve seal letting oil in.

    3) Sometimes the side electrode shrouds the porcelain, and it's usually cleaner where the plug faces the hotter exhaust valve. This gets into the fine art of indexing the plug position, having the plug end up with the side electrode weld facing the exhaust valve. (don't worry about it)

    5) One of your carbs is too lean to fire occasionally, you should be able to find it with the colortune. Tune in the dark.

    For a plug chop to test the pilot circuit, you would need to drive the bike under load, up a slight hill, at low RPM's only using the first millimeter of throttle twist, very light throttle for about 30 seconds, then kill it.
    Have your engine make only 5 horsepower.
    This would be very hard to do in traffic.
    If you have your engine make 40 HP or more, you're testing your main jets.
