    VINFULL.jpg VINShortEngine.jpg VINshorttube.jpg Hi everyone,

I received the title for my 1982 XJ750 Maxim last week, and took it to my local notary service to avoid any headache I might run into trying to transfer an out of state title.

Well, I have been given a plate, but they are telling me now that my shorty VIN is insufficient despite it being the VIN on the ohio title I received. VINshorttube.jpg

The problem is that part of the VIN sticker is scratched off and so we can not determine the actual VIN.

Could any of you help me figure out what my VIN is? I would LOVE to get a couple rides in before it gets too cold.

Stamped on the tube and the engine is: 15R-004513
    The sticker reads: JYA15R XXXX CA00451 3X

The X's are what is scratched off. VINFULL.jpg VINShortEngine.jpg I am so stumped, and so is the notary service. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Just wanted to chime back in here. Despite the notary giving me a plate insurance, the state dmv came back and said that a state trooper needs to verify my VIN so that I can get legitimate title transfer. I have one coming to the house on Thursday morning.

Is there any way for me to further verify that my check digit is 8? I'd like to give the trooper as much info as I possible can because it's all up to him whether or not I can get this thing titled in PA.

    I really am stumped here.

Doesn't Len have replacement VIN stickers?

Thanks in advance for the help guys

read that link from Len and you can calculate it. It's been too long for me to remember if I did the calculation when I responded to you last. But really, that looks like an 8, and I think the trooper will think so too. The only thing you'd have to convince him of is that the 00's that are scratched off were actually unused by Yamaha at that time. And one really looks like a "0". From Len's article:

"The next 5-position field ("45678") identifies the vehicle characteristics, such a body style, engine type, model, "platform", series, etc. Since Yamaha only identified these bikes by their general MODEL ID CODE, this field is always populated by the 3-position model ID code (5N8, 5G2, 4H7, etc.) followed by two zeros (thus 5N800, 5G200, 4H700, etc.). Although Yamaha could have coded engine size, or paint color, or whatever else they wanted to into those extra two positions, they chose not to, and thus they are always filled with zeros:"

in PA the sticker means nothing, the # on the engine means nothing. the only #'s that count are the ones stamped in the frame.
i had the page from PENDOT once, i'll try to find it again

Thanks so much guys. Polock, if you have that, I'd appreciate it it greatly. I've looked around but can't find a lot. The title/papers from Harrisburg are in my office so I'll take pictures of what they sent me tomorrow, just in case someone else is dealing with the same issue I am. It's incredibly frustrating due to the fact that I can't get in touch with the PO

So did the trooper buy your scam with the VIN #?
Seriously, did you get the title sorted?

Ahh thanks a ton! I went ahead and calculated the "check" digit for good measure, and it is indeed "8."

I suppose all I'll really need to convince him is that the two completely missing digits are both 0's.

The MV-41 form says that if the vehicle has been modified in any way that I must also fill out an additional form...but since everything (except the tail hoop/Tank mount) is bolt on I'm not sure it will be necessary. The police officer and I didn't go over that part, so I'm going to print it out for good measure.

Bigshankhank, He's not coming until tomorrow morning.

I just checked what my dmv did and my Vin says JYA15R006CA008480. They converted it for me. I'm in Delaware though.

I assumed that this was certain. But I had the same experience that Polock did when I titled my Seca in Massachusetts. I presented the shorty VIN, same as was on the title and stamped on the frame (I didn't even notice the sticker on the other side). The RMV said , "1982 or later, should have 17 digits. Have police verify and fill out a form." I had a police officer come by and verify it, then I presented the title with the form to the RMV.

They had to "trick" their system, entering the year as a 1981 to accept the shorty VIN, then requesting a correction to the year to make it a 1982.

Moving to Maryland and Virginia, there was no problem titling it.

Theoretically, I'd prefer the shorty VIN, since it keeps a consistent record of the ownership of the bike given the previous title.

    Well,

Two State Troopers came over this morning and were a little confused, but they did verify everything and said they should have the proper documents to me soon.

    Thanks again for the help.
