This question is regarding a non-XJ bike, but I think its covered by general knowledge and I'm sure folks here have good advice for me.

Lets say I have a 15t front sprocket (on my klr650), can I safely move to a 16t sprocket without needing to replace the chain? & Will adding a single tooth up front shift the axle position too far forward?

There is only about 1000 miles on the existing sprockets/chain, but taking a longer highway trip and want more top end.

    Thanks!

I ride a KLR also. The stock gearing will take the bike to about 150 kph, no more.
It doesn't have enough horses to pull the stock gearing to redline.
Taller gearing won't change that. Might even struggle to go that fast.

hmm... thanks but i dont think that answers my question.
I have no interest in pushing it to red line & I know the bike will operate with a 16t spocket as they are available from the factory.

What I want to do is lower engine RPMs for a given speed, as I am taking a longer highway trip with little to no offroad.

My question is, will increasing sprocket size from 15t to 16t require a new/longer chain?

Hearing on the KLR forum that I will not require a longer chain... just looking for confirmation from a few other parties.

    Thanks!

1 tooth up front should be ok. I still think the stock gearing is pretty good for highway riding.
Any taller and you might be shifting down to climb long hills on the expressway.
At 60 mph they're only spinning just over 4,000 rpm anyway. They're happy all the way to 6k.
    I also have a KTM 525 I mount 3 different rear wheels to, sprockets are 42, 48 and 50, same 14T upfront..
In each instance I have to add/remove links.

If the chain is at all worn, you may want to replace it at the same time as the sprockets. I've read that it can accelerate wear on both chain and sprockets when they don't "start out together."

Aye, the chain is pretty new... ~1000 miles, so I should be good

    Thanks!
