I would like to check the valve clearance on the 84 Maxim 400 I recently purchased. I know it is shim on bucket, but wondered if they are the 25mm size? I have a Honda 900 that uses that shim size and lots of spares in the 25mm sizing.

Any tips on holding down the bucket without the Yamaha tool? I have the cresent shaped Honda tool and would like to use that if possible. If not where is a good place to purchase the Yamaha tool.

    Cheers,

    David :D

pm our parts guru chacal or email info @ xj4ever (without the spaces around the "@") he should be able to answer your questions and probably has your shims and the tool. If they're the same as the bigger XJs I believe they are 26mm but can't swear to it. I don't think you can use the Honda tool. The Yamaha tool can be got just about anywhere; Bike Bandit, Old Bike Barn, etc., if he is out, they aren't expensive.

The XJ engines use a 29mm shim.

I don't know if an 84 400 Maxim is an XJ engine. I'm guessing it is because the XS engines had adjustable tappets.

If you find a valve out of tolerance you'll be pulling the shim to read it's thickness. Just throw your caliper on it and measure the diameter then. If the valves are in tolerance you won't care what diameter the shims are.

Thanks Carl. When you get to my age, the memory is the second thing that fails...

Good question, I'm sure I read it somewhere, but ....
I just checked the manual and it isn't listed there....

Yeah, the manual won't list diameter. You're expected to just order the Yamaha part and not concern yourself with the diameter.

The 80 Maxim I worked on a few weeks ago had tappets.

I believe thats an 83 and it should have shims.
