Hi, I need help. I have a '83 xj650 maxim, when i bought it, the PO included an 'ASCHCO' backrest/luggage rack

I can't figure out for the life of me how to install it. It appears it has adjustable arms but the nut seems stuck.

I tried fitting it where the suspension is (i removed the bolt, even tried removing the handgrab), seems like the perfect place for it, but the arm does not fit. (picture included but the suspension bolt is still in place)

And then the other problem is the back (where the luggage rack is) is laying on the taillight. There doesn't seem to be a place to bolt it down.

    Is all hope gone?

See thse two nuts at the back above the taillight? They ride in slots so the width of that universal-style backrest can be adjusted to suit several differeent bikes. You will likely not be able to keep the factory grab bar on the bike. Most aftermarket racks (and even the yamaha rack) are intended to replace the grab bar. If I'm thinking correctly the bar will go on behind the shock, but that one may be intended to mount without removing the shocks at all.
You might be missing some brackets. It should also tie into the rear of the frame.

the angled bracket with all the holes bolts on where the tail lights are you may have to drill a hole in it.
the grab bar comes off to be put on a shelf.

the arm is adjustable you need some pb blaster and heat takes time to loosen
