My bike didn't come with the boots from the carb to the airbox. Im not looking to spend a lot of money on 4 pieces of rubber. anyone here ever make their own?

Making them is not a realistic solution. While they look like simple tubes of rubber, they are in fact shaped velocity stacks. You can find a good used pair on Ebay for very little money. The airbox boots rarely crack since they are not subject to much engine heat and are fairly well tucked out of the way to get much sunlight on them.

Agree with k-moe. Besides you want a good fit from the air box to the carbs to prevent sucking in any dirt or dust. Take your time and find them on Ebay, or contact Chacal, or look around for a parts bike. I found one for $200 and ended up with a good engine, carbs, very good intakes and air boots, frame, etc.

I figured as much about making them. Id love to find a parts bike. Had to convince the wife to let me get the one I have now ha ha. ive seen them on eBay. Are the boots the same between the carb/engine and the carb/intake?

No, but the airbox boots are the same on the XJ650, XJ750, and I think a few others. Could you put which XJ you have into your signature?

Nope, all XJ models use unique airbox boots, and they will not interchange due to length and/or "angle" considerations! The only "interchanges" are:

    a) XJ650 Maxim, XJ650 Midnight Maxim, XJ650RJ Seca all use the same boot. XJ650 Turbo models are in a world of their own.
    b) 1981-83 XJ750 Seca/Euro, 1981-84 XJ750 Maxim/Midnight Maxim, XJ750P Police bike model 37H, and XJ750D models (don't worry, you'll never see one of these) all use the same boot. Note that the 1984 XJ750RL Seca is a unique boot.
    c) XJ700-X (water-cooled) and XJ750-X models use the same boot.
    d) all XJ550 models use the same boot.
    e) XJ900: unique
    f) XJ1100: very unique (4 different boots!). And not the same as:
    g) XS1100 all models, which only use 3 different boots.
    h) FJ600: unique
    I) XJ600 Seca II: unique
