Hello everyone im relatively new here. Anyways when i bought my 81 650 maxim the starter was bad. are there any other bikes that i can use the starter from? not concerned with the make or anything im just sick of roll starting it. id rather not go ebay and i definitely don't want to pay 350 for a new one.

I recently had my bike die, and ended up burning out the starter.

This is the exact starter rebuild kit I used. Honestly, wasn't that hard, and if I remember correctly I didn't use all the parts in it.

I would go to assume that the bushings, or pieces in the starter are worn out and just need to be replaced. Just google a general guide to rebuilding starters, and you'll be set.

Any of the 650/750/700/900 starters will work. Actually, I seem to recall that the 550 starter will also interchange.... I'll check on that though.

The 550 starter is not interchangeable with the 650/750/900. The 550 starter mounts with horizontal bolts; the mounting bolts on the shafties' starters are vertical. While it's possible (unconfirmed) that one might swap the end caps, they're not a direct interchange.

Couldn't remember.... But I'm still wondering on that..... Is it possible that the 550 Seca engine is different from some of the maxim ones that would allow for limited interchange? I just don't recall any of th maxim engines I've had being different....

A 550 is a 550 in this respect. The Maxim engine differs in cams and carbs; the starter mounts the same.

The only visible difference between the two styles of starters is the rear end cap with the mounting bosses.
