Usually my 1981 750 Seca starts right up and runs great. Every once in awhile it will just fire off for a second and then quit. I crank and crank and usually it will eventually start again but not always. I've noticed that the headlight is off while I crank and crank but when I turn the key and the headlight comes on then the engine starts right up again. Is there a relay or something that's going bad?

    The Headlight is behaving normally.

The "Hard-to-start" issue ... that's most likely related to the Carbs.

When is the last time you KNOW for SURE that the Carbs were taken-off and given a thorough Cleaning?

My vote is a "lazy" petcock or a leak/split in the vacuum line that "activates" the petcock. Or of course dirty carbs, but my 550 (with clean carbs) does the exact same thing if it's sat for more than 3 days, and all I have to do is start it on 'prime' and then switch after a few minutes. I have checked the vacuum line and it is fine, I probably need to rebuild the petcock but that can wait until the season ends.

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll check out the pitcock idea and eventually the carbs.
