Can anyone steer me in the right direction to correct an issue I'm having with the speedometer on my 1982 Seca 550?
The Speedometer is erratic. It bounces around. Doesn't hold a steady reading. Needle jumps 5-10 mph when holding a steady speed.
I'm considering replacing the speedometer gear unit assembly on the front wheel, but thought I'd check with the group first in case someone else has worked to correct this same issue.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

First thing ,pull cable apply grease and reinstall see if that helps , if not it is in the gauge, I'm not sure if on the 550 gauge can be opened , look in the how to thread , think big fitz has a post on this. The seca 750 cluster speedo can be pulled quickly good chance the internal gimble needs to be lubed , if you can open gauge dont touch face or remove the needle , spray with a needle penetrating oil in the back of the gauge and force a little grease into the stub where the speedo connects . All should help, when I did mine it was screaming, I also applied a light coat of grease ont the gears with a qtip. Cheers

I'll second that. Lube the cable and drive gear. Use a light weight grease and NOT a heavy grease like wheel bearing grease. white lithium grease works good.

If it's not the cable, then the gauge cluster can be opened.
Let us know and I'll link the thread if you end up needing it.

    Thanks all for the input!

I lubed the cable last winter thinking that was maybe the issue. I'll work on the gauge itself this winter to see if I can open it to carefully lube the mechanics of it.

    Thanks again.
