I checked my VIN number on what I was told was a xj650. The VIN begins with JYA5K500... Plus, it has a chain instead of a shaft. So does this mean it's really a xj550? I got it for free, so it really doesn't matter, I just don't want to buy parts for the wrong bike. I almost put in a bid for 650 carbs.

Not enough of the VIN to know the year but that sure looks like a 550 VIN.

The "Chain Drive" cinches it for me. There aren't a lot of XJ650 Chain Drives.

Well ... there aren't any ... so, I guess that means you have a 550.

You'll have fun on that 550 though.
Just as soon as you get all the Parts and we tune it up right!

Yes, it's a 550 Maxim, more of the VIN would be needed to properly ID the year.

The number on the engine is: 5K5-101013

The good news is you have Mikuni Carbs.
    They are fun to Clean!

Ummmm.... wasn't part of his original problem the fact that he didn't have carbs to begin with?

You're right, I have no carbs. But I guess I have something to look forward to.

Right. Looking for Mikuni BS28s instead of Hitachi HSC32s. ;)
