for some reason i can't get a mirror to screw into the right side bracket. I have an '80 maxim. if I order some aftermarket mirrors from say jc whitney will they fit both sides? the description says 'fits yamahas'. there's no mention of right or left hand threads.

When you buy mirrors, you have to get Yamaha mirrors. It seems that Yamaha are the only ones who use left hand threads on the right hand mirrors for some stupid reason.

I just upgraded my mirrors and had the same problem, I really liked the mirrors although they were both RH threads so what I did was run a 10mm tap thru the hole and it bolted in just fine. It actually tightens down too.

I thought about just tapping a hole too, but ended up using a short piece of aluminum bolted with a left hand thread bolt in the original hole and mounting the mirror to it about 1" forward. You can't notice the mount unless it's pointed out.
I have known people who just cross threaded the right hand threaded mirrors into the hole and called it good. I guess it gets tight enough.

There are adapters you can buy for just such an occasion, the have a male left hand thread that will go into your stock mirror mount, and then female right hand thread to screw your new non-yamaha mirror into

As they said... it's a lefty. One way to tell right off the bat is they are usually "scored" to indicate it.

From what I understand,Yamaha made the right mirror left hand so if in a crash it would just loosen instead of breaking mirror,it does make some sence and it does work sorta for enduros or dual purpose bikes, if mirrors ain't to tight, however on a street bike if you crash a broken mirror is most likely the least of your worries.
