So I just looked and it was Dec 9th 2007 when I posted about breaking the float pillar in one of my carbs and JB Welded it back together. Now, a year and a half later, it finally failed me. Attempting to adjust my float levels again I noticed that it looked like it was loose, sure enough it was. Im probably just going to JB Weld it again. It held up for awhile last time. The only reason it probably came loose is that Ive had the carbs apart 3 times in the past month and a half. oh well. just thought id share.

JBweld has saved my life many times... but new parts are always better... yeah i'd be fixing that carb body too lol

Just a suggestion, you could cut some small reliefs for the jbweld to grab onto if you havent

Maybe tap both sides and put a stud inbetween with jbweld.. that sounds pretty permanent.. either way good luck

Hey, do that twisted wire trick if you can!
If you have enough "post" that has any of the drilled hole, it works.

The problem is that with the new ethanol in the gas its actually softening JB weld and others like it.

I've used JB Weld for years now with great success.
One of my aluminum levers got broke off (bike fell off lift and hit the work bench) so I used JB Weld to glue the two pieces back together. I tried to break them apart to make sure it would hold. That's stuff is amazing! I can't even break the lever apart. So I figure it should hold. It hasn't even so much as cracked a bit yet. I was taking a gamble using on a front brake lever, as it could fail and leave me with no front brakes out on the road (or break when I'm stopping!) but I don't have an issue with it anymore. It does work in most cases, as long as it's mixed properly and let to dry over night at least.
Using it to re-attach the float post is a great idea, but I assume the gas has some thing to do with it finally failing. I'd use it again using a thicker application around the base of the post to be safe.

    Fonz,

There was a guy who did alittle machine work and made a new post for his 550 carb. It was in this forum a few days ago. Nice job I would say too.

I agree the gas we are getting these days is eating stuff that it really shouldn't. Softening JB weld doesent surprise me at all. I would find a more perminent solution myself. You never know when a reapir like that could leave you out on the road somewhere.

I'd try just replacing the carb top. There should be some used one around. I may even have a few? I gutted a set of carbs years ago and still have some parts in boxes out in the shop.

In case you didn't see it clearly, Minturn pointed out a great thread on this subject. Here is the link:

If you ask really nicely, maybe you can get Rice_Burnarr to turn one for you ... of course, I can't speak for him ...
