    I want to see the piece that goes through the middle and operates the contact points; and a view looking straight down on the contact assembly side.

    It's part of the guts of a relay of some sort, I'm thinking the starter solenoid?

    First glance I thought it was a switch, but if it is it's one I haven't had apart.

    With all the wound copper, a relay would be a better guess.

    I don't think it's a horn.

    Yes Fitz there are contacts inside a horn. It works like a relay buzzer. The power to the coil is broken by contacts. The fast opening and closing of the relay makes a buzzing sound. When the relay plunger is connected to a metal diaphram it acts like a speaker. You have a horn. Take a old one apart sometime, its kind of interesting inside.

    WOW you guys are extraordinary wizards. Polock was first but Mlew has the best explanation of the function, awesome sleuthing and deduction by everyone.

    Mlew has the perfect explanation, the contact starts closed, when power is passed thru the contacts into coil the iron core connected to the steel diaphragm is pulled towards the coil, a ring on the core then pushes the contacts apart breaking the circuit killing the power to the coil, without power the diaphragm springs back closing the contacts and starting the cycle over (buzzzzzzz)

    on the back of the horn is an adjustment screw, this screw pushes on the contact assembly adjusting the gap between the core and the contacts, turning the adjuster in closes the core to contact gap causing the contacts to be opened sooner in the cycle.
