Just bought a 1981 XJ750 Seca!!!

I just bought a 1981 XJ750 Seca as my first bike!!!
Taking delivery in about a week's time.

Yammadof sent me to this forum here, told me i'd get great help!

I'm just praying that i don't drop it....

Are there any "common issues" or "simple mods" that I should know about?

I'm definitely going to get a nice exhaust on there.... The Motad exhaust is new but doesn't sound that good...
Any good recommendation as to where I should be looking?

And the right blinker doesn't wanna blink when it's idleing.... anyone knows why?

With the pods you'll wanna make sure the jetting is write.

Mac exhaust is pretty good. The blinker could be a bad/loose bulb, bad ground, or you may need a new flasher.

 

Just an FYI: Notice that the front fender "sits" a little funny. That's because that's NOT a Seca 750 front end on there; from the looks of the fork tubes and brake calipers somebody's swapped in a 650 Seca front end and installed the 750's fender. Probably the "easy way out" of getting rid of the stacked, rectangular lights.

A 550 Seca or 650 Seca front fender should fit "properly" if that's where the front end came from.

The crankcase end covers aren't standard-issue 750 Seca either, although it does appear to be a YICS motor. You might want to check the engine number against the frame number; I suspect a "bitsa." (Bitsa this, bitsa that...)

I think your exhaust is a suppercrappa (pretty rare) not a motad.

Put on a set of engine guards bro.

Don't want to mess up that nice paint on the engine.

Agree exhaust looks like a Supertrapp.

 

I notice a bc plate. Where are you located? Have you ridden the bike yet? Does it idle nice? Any backfiring? Before you hand over any money you might want to pm me. I've got an 82 750 seca. Regards, Rick

 

Definitely not a seca front end, no anti-dive. Probably no air assist either. Engine looks prestine!

Looks like a *ahem* harley fairing. I bet you've got a round headlight as well

 

LOOKS. It's not "pristine" it's "freshly painted." The engine was obviously pulled and repainted as a unit. Which doesn't bode well for things like the valve clearances or alternator brushes having been checked.

I would run a compression test first thing.

 

The more I think about this bike, the more I'd think twice before buying it. The new paint job looks nice, but what did it look like before the paint was put on ? A quick spray job can hide a lot of problems. I just hope the OP knows the history of the bike, or is good friends with the seller.

 

The engine has been rebuilt 4 years ago.
compression tested at 148 on cylinders 1,2,and 4. 135 for cylinder 3...


That picture had the old exhaust on it. The new exhaust is a motad.

And yes turns out it's an XJ650 front end with round headlight swap. Which I'm happy about.

is the 750 front end that much better?

I also fixed the flasher problem with the proper bulb!!

Put some crash bars on.

cleaned up the cockpit and installed an led strip and have an aux led brake light about to be installed! I like to be seen


right now running into hard cold start and misfire issue....
