    I am not sure if it is a 550 or a 650. How do I tell?

    Shaft or chain?

    550=chain drive.
    650=shaft drive.
    750=shaft drive, dual square headlights.
    900=you didn't buy a 900...

    Give us the "shorty" VIN off the engine cover (on the right, above the clutch) and you can learn even more about it.

    DO NOT just start riding it; you need to check the rear brake for delamination at the very least.

    ^^^All the above^^^ Also, the displacement should be cast into the front of the engine...behind the exhaust (not the side...your seca isn't 2500 cc)

    About that rear drum: check it out. But I will say that when I checked mine, it was perfectly fine.

    Peace of mind is important when you only have 2 wheels and the rear is where 80% of the stability is derived.

    So was mine, on the 18,000 mile (when I got it) bike.

    But the one on the 7100-mile bike was what made me post the delamination warning thread to begin with. There are at least a half-dozen or more posts from members who not only found delamination, they found it through a rear wheel lockup. Genuinely serious business.

    It's not just peace of mind; it's transforming an "unknown" into a "known" a very valuable asset with a bike this old.

    It's a 550.

    What color is it? White with red flashes? (It should be.)

    It's an '81, earlier than mine. Check month/year of manufacture on the label on the steering head (toward the left side.)

    PARTS: "See XJ4Ever, Supporting Vendor" in the forums index. Chacal carries about every part you will ever need, and CORRECT parts. You may find cheaper throttle shaft seals for instance, on the internet, but chances are they are not the correct seals, just "close."

    Yamaha still carries a lot of the "consummables" as well, but you will pay an arm and a leg.

    Make one of your first investments a service manual (or two.)

    I love my 550 Secas:

    hmmm. Did you leave out a digit?

    Dark red with white, or faded silver? The stock '82 color scheme was red with black-bordered silver flashes.

    Of course, someone could have repainted it or switched bodywork. Post some pics, let's have a look.

    Its been repainted, you really need to re-route the clutch cable before that causes you problems. It should go up the right frame rail if I remember correctly. Also looks like you have the Turbo rear shocks, Might be too stiff for such a light bike.
