    Hey

I just purchased a 1982 xj 550 seca through an online auction. I dont know anything about the bike other than what I can gather from the grainy pictures I was sent. I am curious about what the difference is between the SECA and MAXIM? Also, what is the general consensus of the bike I bought, does it have any inherent problems, how does it handle, anything to keep an eye on??

The modded bikes on here look great, I cant wait to start modding mine

Hello and welcome. Check the brakes and fuse box. If it has been sitting for a while clean the carbs THOROUGHLY. New plugs, oil/filter, air filter.

Hey BadHabit, looks like we will be learning all this at the same time. I am buying my XJ750 Maxim tomorrow. Stay in touch then we can both learn all the differences. So far the biggest difference I see is body design.

Yeap. Read up in Chacal's section on "The history of Yamaha"
In the "xj4ever" portion of the forums.

to put it generally the difference between the Seca and the Maxim is that the maxim is set up as a cruiser that just happens to have a sport type motor.(picture a Virago that revs twice as high) the seca is more of a sport tourer or "standard" (though it came about around the time such a class of bikes began to vanish)

I'm in the same boat, I've had mine for about a week and I would be so screwed without this site!

    Welcome to all.
    You found the right place.
If I may offer this though-
By the XJCD if still avail-it will have the factory
manual for your bike's and is indispencable.
Or any other manual-they are a must.
2nd; learn these motors inside and out and the damn
thing will eventualy run like new. the yamaha engineers
    got this one right.
