I just got this last week and have since got a title and key made from the seat lock. New battery a little starting fluid and hey it run like a watch. I gave $200 for it and put $65 into it then after it was running put a set of harley mufflers on for $25. What do you think? Pic is from the ebay ad.

Congrats on the purchase and welcome to the forum! It's pretty hard to distinguish what type of XJ you have by that tiny pic... you may want to post another larger one and/or include your model in your signature. Regardless, any running XJ for $2 bills and change is money well spent!

Here is a bigger photo of it. The guy listed it as a 81 750 maxim but I am not sure, I titled it as a 82 maxim. When I get some pics taken with the harley mufflers I'll post them. I am from michigan in the USA and see alot from my state here. This is a photo of a another bike but exactly the same as the one I bought just a little cleaner but not much!

It's a 1982 XJ750J Maxim model (the two sqaure headlights and the square gauge cluster distinguish it most easily from a 1983 version of the same bike), and it looks to be finished in the orginal 2U color (Super Red). The VIN should read as:

    JYA15R00?CAxxxxxx

where "?" = a mathematically generated "check digit" that is calculated based on all of the other digits/letter values of your entire VIN.

and "xxxxxx" = the unique 6-digit serial number of your bike.

Thanks for the responce, I am in battle creek Ltdave. The only numbers on the frame and motor is 15R000325 it has not quite 11,000 mile on it. I bought it as a parts bike with no keys no title and hadn't run in 2 years. It had a left original muffler and a slip on strait pipe on the right but have put a set of used softtail slipons like new from a local shop for $25. still cleaning some oxidation but am happy with it so far. Thanks for the warm welcome this is a great site with tips that help like the harley mufflers.

Way to go! Looks like a very sweet ride for 200, nice! You'll get some looks cruising around on that.

My XJ seems to be a lone wolf in a forest of Harleys around here.

Hey LT ! ... looks like you picked up a 750... how do you like it? I've been riding my 650 to work the past few days, I moved to SC for a new job.

so far its a blast. of course i havent been on a bike with any regularity since 1993...

    some issues ive noticed:
a squeal coming from the engine not unlike a brake squeal. it does it while sitting still so i know its not the brakes...

the front brake hangs up some and either that or as suggested the speedo cable is getting kinked because at left lock, the front wheel will get hung up and not want to spin easily. no issues riding yet but an annoyance non the less...

left handlebar impacts the tank although nothing seems to be out of whack. when it gets a bit nicer and ive got more time ill have to dig into it a bit farther...

i just put my plates on tonight and am currently waiting for my fuse block to come in. i had one but i didnt like it as well as others ive come across...

i bought a fairing (mini) and it got here today but its got some minor issues i need to address before using it. the fact that it doesnt match in color is a minor issue but i do want to get it all finished before its debut...

i can ride the bike as it is but the weather has been down right stupid. its only broke 55 like once so far this year and we are currently under a tornado watch with severe T-storms in the area...

(my apologies for the thread hi-jack)

Many times, brakes that "hang up" or drag means the caliper pistons are unable to fully retract, which is either due to problems within the caliper or a plugged "relief port" in the master cylinder.

On the floor of the m/c, right beside the fluid port that llows the brake fluid from the reservoir to get into the piston passge, there is a tiny TINY! hole that allows fluid pressure in the system to bleed back into the m/c reservoir. If this hole is plugged....did I mention that it's probably the tiniest passageway imaginable, MUCH smaller than any passage hole on the entire bike, including inside the carbs?.....if this hole is plugged, then your brakes will hang up.

A single STRAND of 16 gauge wire, unstranded down to a single piece of wire, is about the right size to probe this relief port hole and get it clean.

i had looked at that one thread on this subject the other day...

too much work for me a THIS time. it will have to wait until next week...

you can feel the front wheel lock up when you go to the stops on the left side, when youre pushing or pulling the bike. it releases when you come off the stop...
