ok boys, I bought me a 440 ltd for a steal with clean title, but it has a sportster tank on it with direct flow petcock and I am leaking gas out the left carb in the on position and found gas in my oil. My question: How screwed am I?

Drain the oil and put in fresh stuff.

sounds like you need to rebuild the carb. You can try tapping it with something in case the float is stuck. That may solve the leaking problem. I would still pull the carbs and clean them.

Other than that, make sure that you turn the petcock to the off position whenever you aren't riding. Or you may be changing your oil way more often than needed.

+1 on the above...sounds like your float valve is not seating properly. Also add an in-line fuel filter. I've got a KZ440 LTD too and the carbs are not as pickey to clean as the XJ carbs, but they do have an item - a plastic plug with "O" rings that seals off the carb idle circuit from the float bowl. An appropriate length of plastic fuel hose with an aluminum/SS screw in the end can be made to substitute if your "O" rings are shot. Also - these carbs are a bear to tune if you don't use the OEM air box.
