Anyone know off hand if Yamaha dealers can cut keys by VIN or the serial number of the ignition switch? Its an 81 so I'm doubting it but I cant call on a Sunday. Just seeing if anyone else has had it done...

I don't know if they can do that but if your helmet lokc and ignition lock are the same you can take your helmet lock to a locksmith and they can take it apart and make a key that way. I took mine to the neighborhood locksmith and it only cost around 10 bucks.

I already pulled the ignition out. Wasn't too bad.

If it's cheap I guess I'll have a locksmith do it. Just thought it would be more at a locksmith then the dealer.

the helmet lock may be easier for them to take apart and cheaper to do. I don't know what is involved in taking apart the ignition to make the key. That is why I asked if you have the same key for the helmet lock.

Oh. I didn't know they had to take it apart. I suppose I'll pull that too. They were the same key.

I went to a lockshop to have one cut for the 80 Maxim by code but no code on the ignition. Turned out there was glass in it and it had to be dis-assembled anyway. Then they cut me 2 keys for $35. The Local Yamaha Dealer said they couldn't do it...

Our bikes have a key code decal on the bottom of the ignition that can be used to cut the key at a locksmith not the dealer! At least our dealer can't cut keys here.

Yeah mine still has the sticker on it. Guess I'll call around tomorrow, because I need to get out and ride!

Peewee, yes, with that key code SOME locksmith who have the older lock depth charts can de-code the number and cut a proper key. Other locksmiths can't. I would try to find the OLDEST locksmith in your area as they are most likely to have access to the older info.

And write that key code down somewhere where it will last forever!

Oh, and here's the bummer part: I've noticed on a couple of ignition sets that I've had that sometimes---{{{cover your ears here}}}----that sometimes the code engraved into the original key and the code on the ignition sticker don't always match quite exactly..........

Good call chacal about noting the code somewhere safe.

My project bike cams keyless and the code on the ignition barrel was incompleate. Local dealer could have sent it off for me and got a key made but it was cheeper for me just to buy a new ignition which came with two keys. So new can still be got.

Thanks guys. Found a guy in town who has been doing it forever and he cut the key for 18 bucks. I'm happy!

Now just waiting for my batt to charge... But she fired up first crank with a jump. Surprising since it sat for over a month in the rain, snow, etc!
