Since I had to use a gas cap, ignition switch and seat lock from different bikes. Is it possible to have them all keyed the same?

Yes. A good locksmith can do it. I'd use the gas cap key as the "base" and key everything else to it since it's the most difficult lock cylinder to get out I believe.

The only thing that would stop you, would be if one or all the lock cylinders used a different key blank. If you can insert the key that you want to key all of them to, then they can be re-keyed as bigfitz52 described.

I ran into this problem...apparently the PO had a tail light problem that required the entire ignition console be replaced. Two different blanks so I'm stuck with two different keys. But I'd consider my case a bit unusual.

Frack. I forgot about that, it's a real good possibility depending on the donor bikes, my '81 is an "A" and my '83 an "F."

I just went and checked. The ignition key will go in the seat lock, but not the fuel tank. So, I should be able to getn the seat lock and the ignition keyed alike? And the fuel tank will be different?

Yes unless you change the cores to all match.

You can have a locksmith rekey but there is an easy fix. After all these are not high security locks. The seat lock comes apart easily. Remove the core (be careful there are small springs and parts) and insert you ignition key. File the brass keying pieces flat to the core.

Basically the proper key pulls the sliding parts flat and when it is removed several of them will sit in the groove preventing the core from turning. When you file them flat there will still be enough of the tabs to keep the lock from turning when the key is removed.

Alternately you can try and match the pieces you have to the ignition key. I did this for my seat lock and got 4 out of 5. This was before I heard about filing. I filed my gas cap.

I had a hard time finding a locksmith willing to rekey a bike, you may not have the same problem.

Instead of filing, just remove and rearrange some of the tumblers, that you have from your seat lock. So that they match your ignition lock. The ones don't match just leave them out. As long as you have one matching, the ignition key will work on it.

    bigfitz52,
that is the best deal yet I've seen. Just change the lock cylinders on the rusted out ones.
