I am interested in replacing the tank of an 83 Maxim 750 with something bigger... any economical suggestions or potential issues? Advice? Looks arent especially important. I dont mind putting a big dirt bike tank on it. I just dont want to haul a gas can. Im headed to Baja from the North East. Also interested in switching the hot fuses out. Could someone direct me to products needed or tutorial/manual pages for this improvement? Thanks!

Unless the tank was switched with a smaller 650 tank. You should already have a 5 gal tank on the bike. With an average range of approx 200-225 miles per tank. This is one of the largest stock tanks in the industry. Short of a custom made tank you will be hard pressed to find anything larger.

On the order of custom made. You might look at something like a Custom Fuel Cell, or Tour Tank.

As far as the fuses. It is a common pratice to replace the fuse block with a more modern blade style fuse block. These are readily available any any auto parts store. or you can contact our resident parts supplier buy click the XJ4ever banner at the top of ever page, and look for the entry titled parts catalog.

All that I have found leads me to 13 liters which is under 3.5 Gal.
I dont own the bike yet... Going to look at it this afternoon. If it is as near as nice a bike as I suspect I'll be coming home with it. 6k miles, only issue is the blinker stays on... asking 750. Cant beat it. You'll probably be hearing from me regarding the directional issue soon...
I had a seca 550 ages ago and really liked it. I'd love a BMW k75 to cruise on, however think that I will be very happy with the Maxim.
I'll let you all know if I come home with the bike!

The 13L (3.4 Gal) spec is for the 650 tank. The spec for the 750 is 17L (4.49 Gal) with a 3.5L (0.9 Gal) reserve. Giving the 750 a total capacity of 20.5L (5.4 Gal).

As mentioned in your other post
Some questions regarding a Maxim that I might buy.

The charging system does not usually kick in until approx 2K rpm. This combine with a weak battery, and corrosion/oxidation in the electrical conectors could restirct the current enough to keep the signal unit from triggering properly.

I have an 83 XJ750 Midnight Maxim with the factory tour deluxe package installed.

I have found the bike to be a very comfortable cruise/tour bike. Both solo, and two up. With an average fuel mpg around 40-45. Very capable of long range hwy running with power to spare when needed.

According to my manual, and backed up by my experience, 750 Maxim fuel capacity is 4.5 gallons TOTAL. That reserve number is part of the capacity, not added to it. I have run mine completely dry and only been able to squeeze 4.25 gallons in. Seca has a slightly higher capacity.

    Edit: I did a search, here: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=1 ... acity.html

I believe the reserve is part of the total listed capacity, not in addition to it. I bielve the 750 maxim tank is a little under 5 gal, not over it.
