Since this 82 Maxim 750 has only a 3.5 gallon tank, I was wondering if anyone knows of a 5 gallon or so size tank that will fit this bike. Living in the mountains of Arizona, some rides have vast distances between gas stations.

The 750 Max had the largest tank of the XJ's, so you'll be looking at doing some mods to fit a different tank.
V-Star 650 tank is 4 gal, or you could use Harley split bob tanks 4 to 5 gal.
Or you could get a couple of water bottle size fuel bottles to strap to the frame or put in saddle bags. Some chopper specialty shops sell them like TCBrothers.

The Seca 750 has a 4.5 gallon (useable; 4.75 actual) fuel tank. It should fit right on without needing modification. If you need more range than that look into fitting a Rotopax or other similar fuel storage system. If you don't mind giving up space for luggage you could use any fuel tank as an auxilary tank (mounted like you would a top case) and plumb it with quick disconnect fittings so it can be removed easily when not needed.

Thinking this over, I thought that the 750 Max tank is 4.5 to 5 gal.
Is it possible that the PO installed a 650 tank before you purchased the bike?

The 750 Max tank is 3.5 gallons. Thats mainly due to it being "pointier" towards the rear.

I'll look for a seca 750 tank if it's 4.5 gal. My tank has a cpl of dents in it anyway:)

XJ900 tanks are 22 litres, not sure exactly how many gallons that is but seems pretty big if that's any good?

    ~ 5.8 US gallons

It looks like the 900 tank might require a little modification to the seat, but would bolt right on otherwise. Hmmm.....I might have to go shopping for one myself.

Be sure to get a pre-Diversion tank. The Diversion tanks mount differently. An easy way to tell them apart is the Diversion tanks will all be listed for sale in non U.S. currencies

A TDM 850 tank should also work, but it's a 5.2 gallon tank, would look wrong, and is rarer than hen's teeth in the U.S. (though if it's attached to a running example of the bike you should buy the whole package).

Actually it holds 4.5 gallons. When I fill up just after switching to reserve I can fit almost 4 gallons in it. The 650 and 700 maxims had the smaller 3.5 gallon tanks.

Moose is correct. The 750 Maxim tank is about a gallon larger than the 650 maxim tank. The 750 tank has a larger capacity because it it taller, and wider. the larger 'hump' or 'shoulders' also give the bike a much nicer line, too. Not to mention an extra 50 mi of ride before filling.

Per Service Manual for 1982 XJ750J Maxim

Tank Capacity: 17L (3.74 Imp gal., 4.49 US Gal )
Reserve Amount: 4.1L (0.9 Imp gal., 1.08 US Gal )

Previous Owners must have switched out the tank for a smaller one from a 650.....

Good luck finding one in decent shape....

Here is my tank....badge painted silver instead of that hideous reflective gold...

Just for giggles, I did some other swapping around to try some things.

    Here are the results:

1 900rk Tank- does NOT mount onto the xj650 maxim, xj750 maxim, OR xj750 seca frame. The upper mount for the frame reflector contacts the seam edge of the 900 tank before the tank can slide onto the rubber mounts. If the reflector mounts were cut off, the tank would slide onto the rubber mounts, BUT the tail of the tank would still be about an inch too far back and will still not allow the tank to be bolted down.

2.750 Maxim tank - as we all know, the 750 maxim tank is a direct bolt-on swap for the 650 maxim tank. The 750 maxim tank WILL also bolt directly onto the 750 seca frame without any modification to the tank of the frame.

The seca seat will still work on the frame, but there is about a 1" or so gap between the seat and the 750 maxim tank.

The seca side covers will not mount onto the frame as the tail end of the maxim tank aims down at the back and interferes with the sidecover top-front edge.

    3. 750 seca tank - WILL physically bolt directly onto the 650 and 750 Maxim frames.

The Maxim seat front edges need to be modified to fit the extra length and steeper angle at the rear of the 750 seca tank.

I did not have time to check on sidecover fit. However, due to the upsweep at the rear of the seca tank, the maxim side cover upper front point should still be ok and not interfere.

    Hope that helps some............

    You're welcome!

Something I didn't try...... and will do at some point this winter--- I'll see about the XS750 Special tank and how it fits(FITZ!?!?!?! LOL)/ or doesn't fit on the various xj frames.

Just curious, I think the frames are the same so will a 750 maxim tank fit on a 700 without having to modify the seat?

The frames are totally different. The mounting rubbers are larger on the 750 and probably don't line up. Not sure if there's a difference in length between the two. Possibly with some light modification.
Sometime today after I get home from work, I'll have to see how/if my 750 tank sits on the 700. I'd like to have more fuel capacity on my 700 too!

Thanks if it works let me know I found a 750 tank for less than fifty that I wouldn't even have too repaint.

    reviving this thread.. ;)

great information, thank you. would you happen to know which tanks will fit onto a 900 frame? guessing 650 and 750 maxim with new back mount only? I also like the looks of the xj1100 tanks the way they curl, any experience with those?

appreciate any advice you can give, thank you

Hello my name is Rick, I have a question, I would like to put a bigger gas tank on my 1983 750 Maxium XJ, is a 1983 Yamaha maxim XJ 1100 gas tank bigger than the 750 and would it fit without interference with turning radius and not customizing where the tank meets the seat does anyone know or have swapped 1100 tanks for the 750 tank?

No, the 1100 tank is NOT a drop-in upgrade.

And it doesn't hold any more fuel. If you need more range invest in a Rotopack or a large MSR type fuel bottle. I carry a spare liter in one of my tool tubes.
