I have a problem with a leaky carb after I shut off my bike and sometimes just all the time. It seems to be coming from the top of the float bowl and dripping down until the gas finally drips off the bottom of the bowl near the bottom where it drains. Any suggestions ?

Make sure you switch the pet cock from prime to run once the engine's running. Give the carbs a clean and replace damaged gaskets. Check to see if there is petrol in your engine oil, if there is dont run the bike until you have it sorted.

Yeah, your lookin' at a garage fire ! That's the formula !
You need a petclock re-build, as it's not working right.
The temporary fix is a $5 lawn mower fuel cut-off.

You can try "touching up" just the one leaky carb, without getting into a full-on knock-down drag-out carb session.

You have to remove the rack. The needle and seat are lightly polished with 1500 grit, then the float pin and the inside of the pivot are polished.
Your needle could be worn out. Adjust the float level.

If the carbs are off, I'd have to clean the crud out of all 4 bowls, check the Pilot Well passages, and "clunk test" the top sliders.
Do a search for "clunk test" and "carb cleaning , old school"
    Time to get dirty.

Chacal has them in stock, I'm sure he'll be along soon. Otherwise, go the the For Sale/Trade forum and you'll see his huge post there. Go to page 13 and scroll down until you get to the Hitachi Carb section and look for bowl gaskets. They are only about $3 each.

Blair, is your bike an air-cooled or water-cooled model?

    Air-cooled XJ700's use Hitachi carbs,.

Water-cooled XJ700's are XJ700-X models, and use Mikuni carbs........

I have a Hitachi carb because my bike is air cooled. Can you PM me with all the details of shipping and what not. Also , what other parts are available ? There are other things that I might like to replace but I cannot find a source locally.
