So I have had this little xj550 maxim for a while and I love it to death. I love the looks and the short wheelbase and everything. But I want more power out of it. I also have a 1986 yamaha fazer 700 with the awesome 20 valve genesis engine. I was wondering how possible it would be to do an engine swap on the xj550. Anybody know how possible that would be? I will also be replacing the front suspension and brakes and probably the back wheel on the maxim as well.

Considering that the FZR has its cylinders tilted forward 45 degrees and uses downdraft carbs, I'd say it's questionable. The way that engine was made to work on the Maxim-X was to transplant the watercooled cylinder jacket onto the existing drivetrain and modify the head to take a set of sidedraft carbs.

and you'd have to figure out where to put the radiator, and fan, account for the filler neck, do wiring harness mods to account for the temp sensor, the whole guage cluster, lights, and fusesare different.....

not gonna fit down tubes would have to be removed the back bone also after that you can figure how your gonna mount it. Unless you stretch the frame the cyls will hit the fender. The frame on those motors wraps around the head and the carbs go on the inside of the frame then where is your tank gonna sit. Then you have the cooling. Not something that you can do in your garage. Would cost you more then it would be to buy a fz700 or fzr 750. I believe they are deltabox frames which would lighten the load

Wouldn't be a WHOLE LOT easier just to get the Fazer roadworthy?

The Fazer is "designed around" the motor; that's how it is that it only weighs 480lbs despite being liquid cooled. It's a unique animal unto itself, believe me I just took a stroll through the fiche. The carbs are where the gas tank should be, the gas tank is where the carbs and airbox are on your Maxim.

I was going to suggest maybe some cosmetic changes to make it more Maxim-like but about all you could do would be to go to a round headlight. And THAT would be a bit of a challenge due to the fact that the original mounts top-and-bottom instead of on the sides as you might expect.

It would be cheaper to go find a Maxim-X.
