I need a good xj mecehanic somewhere in IL or a recommended shop that can take a look at my bike and get it tuned up for winter. I'm not too good with tools and would be impossible for me to even try. The bike definately needs all new wiring and just someother minor things.

I need to get my carbs professionally tuned, so I'm looking as well. I've been recommended to Little Al's on Milwaukee near Foster. He's an ornery old man that hates Hondas and loves Kaws, but apparently he's good. I've also been to a winterizing demonstration at ACE on Jackson near Halsted. Very nice people, and a good collection of classic bikes in the shop. I'm sure they know their stuff, but I'm not sure of prices at either location.

I just did a simple search on Little Al's and it, for the most part, was negative reviews. There were a few that said the work was good but still seems sketchy.

    Phan10m,

I can't give you a personal reco, but I have heard good things about CycleTech in Summit.

Somewhat related, I'm looking to have a couple new tires mounted. Can anyone make a recommendation? I see ads on craigslist by retired/laid off mechanics willing to do it for $20 a piece (wheel already off the bike, which is fine). i hesitate with craigslist, but I did get the Seca off there.. Chicago Cycle quoted me at $45 a piece, again wheels already off.

    Thanks.

crewwolfy, just read this post and am wondering did you ever find some one to do your carb work. If so, can you please shoot me a p.m. I am also looking for some one in the chicago area that does paint work.

No, I haven't. Rusty Savage offered so guide me through it, I may still take him up on that if the offer still stands. But I've heard that properly tuning carbs with a DynoJet kit is a pain. If I can't do it myself, my first stop will be ACE in the west loop Chicago. If the price is too steep, I'll have to start looking around. I also have some busted exhaust studs I need to have replaced..

Are you looking for body paint (tank, fenders, panels)? Or are you looking for powdercoating (rims, frame)? Whereabouts in Chicago are you? I'm in transition from Uptown to somewhere in/near Ravenswood.

A friend just had his 81 CB750 synched up at Motorcycle Mania (3662 Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago). He had nothing but good things to say about them. I live near there, so I'll have some work done there as well, but not sure how soon that'll be.
