Would like to transfer to a maintenance free model, that i wont have to replace every other year.. Any suggestions about how to shop for a battery upgrade? Willing to spend a bit more for quality this time.

Read chacal's bit on battery and electrical in the catalog, other than that, not many resources.

AGM is the way to go. no maintenance. the Lithium are overpriced and unnecessary IMO

What about the Bikemaster TruGel? How does it compare to the AGM? Anybody have any experience with them?

AGM and gel are basically the same. Booth use lead and acid, the AGM has the acid absorbed in what looks like fiberglass cloth, the gel has the acid in some stuff that looks like Jell-o.
i've changed hundreds of these at work, in our stuff they last about the same, about 6 years, some 4 some 8. Our AGM's always get the green corrosion where the terminal comes out of the body, the gels just get weak. I use gels in the bike just because they fit better
