My XJ550J has a wierd problem. I recently replaced my factory ball bearing setup with an All Balls tapered set. Properly torqued and retorqued, the front still "knocks" as if the bearings aren't seated. A call to all balls reassured that I have the correct bearings and they are in the right places. The kit came with 2 grease seals that were also used. The races are seated correctly. Did I miss a trick or something?

Hopefully the bearings or races were not dammaged durring the installation. A small hammer nick on the race will cause problems. Could your "knock" be from the wheel bearings?

I don't think so, they've already been checked. I'm having a friend who used to be part owner of a motorcycle shop do this work for me. He's basically checking out and fine tuning everything since I put it together. I've kept him busy! The races (I installed them) were fine and were seated correctly. Are all that's needed are the upper and lower bearings and the grease seals? I'm concerned I may have left something out like a washer or something. I installed everything that came with the kit and followed advice given here for the installation.

I got a taper bearing kit from Chacal and installation was straight forward and simple. There is a toque spec you need to follow though, which is difficult if you dont have the proper tool for the special nuts.

make sure you arent feeling a clunk in the front axle or forks transferring up into the steering head. Thats about all I got for suggestions.
