remove the ignition switch and take it to a good locksmith. For about 35.00 they can plug the code into their computer and cut you a new key.

Thanks for the info. I found locksmith able to make me a key using the code beneath the ignition.I just disconnected the whole thing and brought it to their shop. It's going to cost me ($95.00) but at least I wont have to drill out my tank, seat and helmet locks. AND I still have the original chain lock that is stored on the bike. I WILL be making a spare this time and giving it to the wife.

That, sir is the "living in California" penalty. But also the best course of action.

Cost me $25 here in semi-rural Michigan.

TIP: Make multiple spares. Keep one in your toolbox or desk drawer, on a key fob. Grind the plastic "knobbiness" off one, and keep it in your wallet or riding jacket. Give yet another to your wife; or for those bachelors amongst us, just drop it in the same place (filing cabinet, safe deposit box, sock drawer) where you keep the title.

yeah my bike keys no longer clip on to my main ring. the clip failed and dropped in the parking lot at my dentists office. now my key lives in my riding jacket zipped up in the inside pocket when not in use.

Soooo where are you finding the key code. Took mine off and all it says under the ignition is a "B4" and "010"
which seems much too short for a key code...

I actually just jammed a key blank in there and looked at the marks then dremeled it, and managed to get my ignition to work, but it won't open the gas cap, and i'd much prefer a proper key...

    Key codes aren't very long.

Mine was on a little sticker on the underside of the ignition lock.

all great ideas. I keep spare keys and other important keys (like the very expensive fobs for my late model vehicles) hidden in a discrete place inside a non descript white cardboard box on a shelf with other identical boxes in my attached garage. I also have a locking key box mounted to the wall in my laundry room where less important keys are kept.
