I am about to change the oil on my bike and I was wondering if anybody uses Lucas Oil Treatment or something else similar in theirs. I use it religiously in my cars (including my van that has 286,000 on it). Basically it's a petroleum additive that helps the oil coat and protect metal parts better.

I'm not sure what the difference is between motorcycle oil and car oil, and that's why I'm asking the question. I know you are not supposed to use car oil in a bike and vise versa, so I just wanted to ask about using the Lucas Oil Treatment for fear that maybe it would screw something up.

    Thanks

Probably not a good idea Pacocase. You clutch needs to run in a type of oil that keeps it from slipping. Automotive type oils (some) have friction modifiers in them and that will cause your clutch to slip and be toast in short order. I am not familiar with the Lucas treatment, but in my opinion, I would stay away from using it in your bike, to be safe. >PD<

I wouldn't, I sell the stuff at work, and it works great in cars. But I would be worried about the wet clutch in the bikes. anything with friction modifiers can make the clutch slip. So with that said, I wouldn't do it.

Yeah it's the safer thing to do to leave it out. Thanks for the input. So basically the difference between motorcycle and car oil is friction for the clutch. Thanks for the replies.

Exactly. I used car oil in my old 650 years ago and fried the clutch in less than a week. Didn't know any better back then I guess. Of course, there weren't any forums to consult back then either. These motorcycle forums are the best source of information and I've picked up alot of useful information on them. You learn something everyday!!

Like the others I wouldn't put additives in your bike, just run a quality motorcycle oil, I recommend Golden Spectro Synthedic, all my bikes have been using it for roughly 15 years.

i use lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer in all my 4cyl. bikes. never had any clutch problems, it does say on the bottle to not use more than 10% if its going in 4 stroke bikes with wet clutches.

I noticed after posting the thread that it says on my bottle that it's "safe to use in high-performance motorcycles." I already changed the oil without it though. I guess I know for next time. :)

I been running lucas in my ol 650 for the past two years or so, have not seen any problems arise yet. even slowed down my valve cover gasket leak a little, still replaced it but it did slow it dramatically. Local motorcycle shop owner said lucas was good to use, but def be careful on the amount you use. strictly 10%
