I have an 82 maxim 4000 and I've been riding it work lately but I have a question... how long is too long cruising at interstate (65-75) before the engine decides its had enough? My bikes gear ratio is fairly liner ( @ 65mph rpm is 6.5 70mph rpm is 7.5) so it has some space before redline but I don't want to push a 30 year old bike.

I would like to take it on a 150 mile round trip where 100 or so mikes would be at 65 to 75.

These engines love to be revved high, that's where the powerband is so I wouldn't worry about it getting "tired". I know might sound strange if you are coming from the v-twin world.

Solid advice with a couple of cautions:

Your bike's engine is pretty much a "half an XJ" except that the twins are even a bit more "high-strung" tuning-wise than even the 550s.

You should be able to run the engine at 6500rpm, 7000rpm, 7500rpm all day without ill effect, provided it's in a proper state of tune.

If your valve clearances aren't in spec or you're in need of carb service, then you could very well hurt it. But as long as all the maintenance is up-to-date and it's not running lean, then go for it.

    What he said ^^

I had mine up to 8k rpm for about 10 minutes once. That`s +- 120Kmh, but i usually ride at 7 - 7.5k rpm on the highway and it just purrs.

Awesome, on my way home from work I held it at 75 mph for about 10 minutes and oil temps were right at 220 to 230 and it was 85ish degrees out. Seems to handle the speed and rpm just fine but I wanted to make sure haha.

    Thanks!
