My maxim has what appears to be an oil cooler attached to the front of the frame. It doesn't appear to be stock (attached bubba style with hose clamps). Did they come with one? Can I remove it and run the motor safely without it.

It's aftermarket. I bet it is either a Derale or a Lockhart.

No problem removing it. When you change the oil remove the cooler and all related items. There will be an adapter in between the oil filter cover and the motor. I'm not sure if you need a different bolt, if you do I have one.

I may be interested in it if you don't want it.

thanks for the reply. I am wanting to get this bike back to it's simplest form and get it running. Then I'll decide from there where to take it. I usually run on the assumption that the engineers did their homework on the design before initial release and too many add ons create more places for potential problems and failures. The exception I guess is if there is an inherent design flaw that needs to be addressed.

Do these engine's oil temps tend to run hot with normal average use? I doubt I will be driving it very hard. Even if I rode it full time in place of my car (I'm sure I will not) it would be less than 10000 miles a year. I live in florida so it does get a little hot in the summer.

I would think that an oil cooler would be a good thing to have in Florida. You've got big time heat, and you've got horrible traffic. I'd keep the oil cooler in Florida if I were you.

KEEP THE COOLER ON!! It can't hurt other than if you notice it leaking. If it's leaking, tighten up the hose clamps!! For everyone out there that want's a factory oil cooler on the seca 550, find one for the FJ600, Radian or the FZ 600. Cool oil can't hurt the bike.. unless you are on the Alaskan highway :)

I agree with the guys who recommend you keeping the cooler.

Oil coolers are a good idea for a high-revving air cooled bike.

All the heat you can get off that bike while its running will keep it running longer than if you abandon the cooler and run without it.
