I've been tinkering with my friends '82 Maxim 650.
    I'm mainly a XS650 guy though.
I got it running pretty good, but after about 5 minutes of running it dies and will not restart. Just cranks.
If I let it sit for a couple hours it will fire right up.
It's not flooding and it is charging.
    Any thoughts?

Bad fuel might be the cause. May want to dump some dry gas (Heet) in there and add some fresh fuel. Or it could be over heating, sure it has enough oil in it? check the vacuum line as well, it could have been replaced with non-vacuum line and it is getting warm and collapsing in on its self.

Are the valves in spec? Have they been checked?

(Classic symptom of a tight valve or four; or a plugged gas cap vent.) Plus everything else Doc mentioned is also a possibility.

Not sure I can explain it, but I just had the same problem and it turned out to be a spark issue. Cleaned some corroded wires and replaced the spark plug caps and all is well. This was all done by the local stealer - as I was in their parking lot when I could not get the stupid thing started.

I was having problems with the bike dieing after driving 5 mins down the road. It got more frequent up until it dies in the parking lto adn would not start.

So unless they pulled a fast one on me...

When this happens again. Pull a plug cap and put a plug into it. Place plug and cap against engine and turn over. If you have spark then its a fuel problem. If you don't have spark then it's an ignition problem.

You will probably have to replace the pulse coils. They are located on the left side of the crank. When they get hot they quit working.
