I was reading another post where someone mentioned that the coils in the Maxim X are known to be bad in the rain. Anyone else had problems in the rain?

I was riding my 85 X750 in the rain and after about an hour when I had to slow down, it was chugging and obviously not firing on all cylinders. I was going to attempt replacing the plugs and wires by splicing the wires, but if the factory coils are known to be bad in the rain, then maybe it's best to go ahead and replace with aftermarket coil/wires.

The X does have a historic coil problem. Haven't ridden mine in the rain, so I don't know if I have the problem or not. I believe the top choice for coil replacement is the Dana coils.

There is a way to make the coils and wires dependable in the rain. Read my blog. I live in Florida and ride rain or shine and have not had a problem out of mine since I modified them.

Capy, thanks for your blog entry. I will give this a shot and let you know how it turns out. One question though..

"Carefully rotate wire in coil socket until you feel them free up.
Pull plug wires from coils strait out. Do not bend while pulling."

I'm not sure if your coil from the XJ700 is the same as the 750, but mine is all one piece. I thought the wires couldn't be separated from the coil.

You might want to check but I am pretty sure they are the same. I can send you a picture of mine if you like to see if they are the same.
