I took the bike out for around half an hour it was around 42 degrees to try and get through the 100 miles of tire "break in" (only a dozen or so miles left).

It was dark out and I had my Escort Redline mounted on the bar like normal. I noticed the top half of my speedo was pretty dark. The bike was still cold. After a few seconds (when I remembered to look again) It was lit back up like normal. I doubt it has anything to do with the Escort as it doesnt dim the lights or appear to strain the system at all and the voltage reader on the escort is happy and never shuts down. Could it have been just a weird glitch? Maybe a loose connection that cleared up?

Quite usual for the small panel lights to get a dirty/loose connection on any older vehicle, that's most likely all it was. If it happens again give the speedo a rap with your knuckle around where the light should be, bet it comes on.

In my experience about 90% of the vehicles I've seen with panel lights out, a bash on the cluster/dash brings them back on!

Sounds like just a corroded bulb connection. It's not too difficult to take the speedo cover off and clean the bulbs and sockets. Make sure you give it a dab of Dielectric Grease for good measure after cleaning any corrosion.

Good to know guys I'll hopefully get a chance to look at it tonight. But we have family coming into town as well so we shall see.

On a side note do any of you guys run rd's on your bikes?

Think they're illegal here, and the police use laser guns now anyway

On the plus side, they have to put signs up where there are fixed speed cameras so at least we get warned about those haha

Got some godawful drivers too  This is what's funding the recomission of my XJ, the insurance payment (finally!) from when I got taken out in may 2010. Guy coming the other way just turned into a side road & completely cut me off, nearly lost my right leg below the knee.

Mind you, my old faithful CX500 made a nice mess of his '08 BMW, ripped the back suspension out of it haha

Some nice roads, shame about the cagers...

Well, all right to a point. I still have the leg, plus a pin in the tibia running knee to ankle held by 4 screws. They did a good job getting it straight & same length as the other but it does ache when the weather gets cold/damp.

I enjoy thinking about the state of that car, was a proper mess & the CX? Bent forks & wheel, smashed headlamp/bikini/indicator and broken lever... Don't think the guy was laughing much though when my adrenaline was still flowing & pain hadn't kicked in, he asked if I was OK & I grabbed my knee, waved my jelly leg at him and said "umm yeah I'm just fine thank you sir (or words to that effect lol)
